Igor Ellyn, QC, CS, FCIArb. is a seasoned arbitration and mediation professional, in addition to being a business litigation lawyer for over 40 years. He has been appointed to arbitrate many commercial disputes and was counsel on complex arbitrations and litigation matters arising from arbitrations in Ontario, Quebec and England. He is especially knowledgeable in corporate, shareholder, partnership, real estate, commercial leasing and contract interpretation cases and disputes involving detailed financial, valuation and appraisal evidence.

Igor has mediated commercial disputes both as mediator and as counsel. His calm, pragmatic approach inspires trust and he often identifies creative solutions to difficult business problems, which assist the “warring” parties to reach a settlement, which may have eluded them over years of expensive litigation.

Igor conducts arbitrations and mediations in English, French and bilingually. He is also fluent in Romanian, conversant in Hebrew and German, and understands some Italian and Spanish.

Since 2020, he has developed an expertise in online arbitrations, mediations and court hearings and favours electronic documents and the elimination of paper files.

Igor is the author of three books: Litigating and Arbitrating Business Disputes (LexisNexis), Directors and Officers Liabilities in Canada (Juris) and Enforcement of Money Judgments in Canada (Juris) and of more than 50 papers and articles on litigation and arbitration topics, including dealings with financial expert witnesses and electronic trials. He was an instructor in the Osgoode Hall LL.M. program on Arbitration and was an arbitrator at the VIS Moot Arbitration Competitions in Hongkong and New York.

He is a Past Chair of CIArb’s Toronto Chapter and co-chaired CIArb’s Annual Symposium on Arbitration in Canada in 2016 and 2017. He is a Past President of the Ontario Bar Association. He was the Chair of the Business Litigation and Arbitration Practice Group of INBLF.com.
